King Henry II was born on this day in British history, 5 March 1133. He is remembered as the first of the Plantagenet kings in England. Henry had eight children with his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, most notable among them King John and King Richard the Lionheart. Also notable during Henry II’s reign was his attempt to reform the crown’s relationship with the church, with the resulting death of Thomas Becket, Henry’s one-time friend.
