Birthday of Florence Nightingale
12 May 1820
Florence Nightingale is most well known as the founder of the modern nursing practice. She gained her nickname ‘the Lady with the Lamp’ while making her nighttime rounds as she tended to wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. She subsequently helped establish the world’s first secular nursing school, and the oath taken by new nurses (modeled on the Hippocratic Oath) is called the ‘Nightingale Pledge.’ Nightingale also worked as a social reformer and was a prodigious writer.
